Interview
Thanks so much for having me! I’m super happy to be here with one of my fave online buddies! (You!)
And I’m excited to have you!
The heroine in my novella is Abby. She’s a wounded soul who covers her hurt with a very determined identity. She lives in the north woods of Wisconsin with her father, managing a fly-fishing and canoeing excursion company for the wealthy who wish to experience the “simpler side of life”. This was common at the turn-of-the-century, but what is uncommon, is Abby’s wish to keep her streams and river private from the rich who “do nothing” to enhance the world around them.
Hmm, I’m seeing some similarities. 🙂 How about the hero.
Charles Farrington the Third is a flirt with zero ambition in life. He too hides deep wounds, but contrary to Abby, his are kept secret by a flamboyant personality that prefers to stay busy so he has little time to dwell. But, Abby’s serious personality and impatience with his status and him, sends Charles reeling back to memories he’s kept buried.
Uh oh! What inspired this story idea? What is a song, TV show, or pure imagination?
Honestly, what inspired it was many hours spent fly-fishing with my husband and many summers spent on the Flambeau River in Wisconsin. Now, we take our kids to Hidden Cove Resort in Phillips, WI and love to adventure in the great north woods
I knew I spotted some similarities. 🙂 The story is set in 1890 Wisconsin. How much research did you have to do to make it authentic?
Well, I sort of have lived in the era for many years, so it’s a cumulative amount of information from that research. However, I did need to research fly-fishing. The types of flies that existed in the day, the rods they would have used, as well as where good fly-fishing was near the Flambeau River.
Sounds fun! How about some non-novella questions? 🙂 What do you do to relax?
It sounds dreadfully unintelligent, but I do love to watch TV. Some one else does the thinking for me. 🙂 I really enjoy superhero shows such as: The Flash, Arrow, Daredevil, and the like.
You won’t get any judgment from me. Those are awesome shows! What do you do to have fun?
My family is outdoorsy. I’m highly untalented in that arena but I still enjoy giving it a go. So we kayak, rock climb, camp, fly-fish, and I usually secret away a book in case I get overwhelmed by my lack of athletic stamina.
Glad to know I’m not the only one. What do you do to live it up?
Sleep. I love to sleep. Sleep is my party.
Yes! Candy or chocolate?
Neither? I’m not a huge chocolate or candy person. I know. GASP. Although, you will see FB statuses about chocolate occasionally because I do get the “urge”. But I’m typically more of a coffeeaholic.
Meh, coffee doesn’t do it for me. Your turn to gasp. 😉 Soda or Tea?
Tea. If there’s no coffee available.
You made the right choice, lol. TV shows or movies?
I sort of mentioned this above. LOL but outside of superhero drivel :), I enjoy British TV of all kinds, Hawaii 5-O, Criminal Minds, and NCIS-LA. Movies, I’m all over the gamut on what I enjoy. Pretty much anything as long as it’s not horror or extremely raunchy.
Cool! Before you go, can you share any advice to aspiring writers?
Oh man. There’s SO much advice. But I would say, just write. Write write write write. Don’t stop. I’ve seen too many writers hang out on one book for years, or regurgitate the same concept over and over trying to make this magical equation of a story. But don’t. Just write story after story. Be willing to never see them published. Do what you love first, learn second, and worry about publication third.
Amen! Thanks for stopping by, Jaime!
